Why the World’s Most Famous Parrot is Still Vanishing

Published:  at  10:30 AM

The Spix’s macaw, also known as the blue macaw, is a vibrant blue parrot that was once declared extinct in the wild due to illegal trapping and trafficking. Featured in the animated movie Rio, this species gained worldwide attention, garnering support from numerous international conservation organizations. However, preservation efforts face significant challenges; thus, the future of the Spix’s macaw remains uncertain.

The Role of the Movie Rio

The movie Rio, which featured Spix’s macaws as its main characters, Blu and Jewel, brought global attention to the species’ plight. This awareness helped generate support and funding for conservation projects and educated a wide audience about the real-world threat of habitat loss and illegal pet trading.

Conservation Efforts

The species was officially declared extinct in the wild in 2019, after the last sighting in 2016 . However, a small number of its population remained in conservation centers.

Conservationists worked tirelessly to restore the species’ natural habitat in the Caatinga forest following centuries of deforestation, human encroachment, and agricultural development.

After years of conservation efforts, 200 macaws have been bred from just two parent birds, and 52 individual birds have since been reintroduced into their natural environment in June 2022, leading to the first wild-hatched chicks in decades in 2023.

Ongoing Challenges

Despite these successes, the reintroduced population remains small and fragile. The birds are vulnerable to natural predators and other wildlife threats. Furthermore, recent controversy over a potential circovirus outbreak has threatened to stall progress, highlighting the biological risks of reintroduction.
