Poetic Appeal and Aesthetic of Khiêm Mausoleum

Published:  at  11:00 PM

Khiêm Mausoleum is a burial site built under the Nguyễn Dynasty, dedicated to Emperor Tự Đức; thus, it is colloquially known as the Tomb of Tự Đức. Situated in a narrow valley, under the evergreen branches of conifers, the mausoleum remains a hidden jewel, concealing its artistic and mysterious appearance.

Harmonic Architect

Known as the poetic emperor for his profound knowledge and deep appreciation of the arts, Tự Đức designed a tranquil, evocative mausoleum as his final resting place. In doing so, he broke away from the strict, linear spirit path typical of most Nguyễn Dynasty imperial tombs.

Instead, the Khiêm Mausoleum follows a free-form layout that winds along the natural contours of the hills and Lưu Khiêm Lake. The complex features various man-made elements, including lakes, islands, and conifer forests, each intentionally placed to create a sense of harmony and balance throughout the grounds.

The Khiêm Philosophy

Khiêm, which means modesty or humility, is one of Tự Đức’s most famous philosophical perspective. Every buildings and features in the complex carry this word in their names.

This philosophy emphasizes the need of humility, and the elimination of ostentation. This is shown beautifully in the harmonic architecture of the mausoleum. Instead of flashy and pretentious buildings that detached from the transcendent nature, Khiêm Mausoleum conceals a sense of balance and harmony with the natural features surrounding the complex.
