Dopamine Overload

Pornography is a source of supernormal stimulus that triggers unnatural releases of dopamine, which is the chemical for pleasure and motivation. This cause the brain to craves for more pornography, or increasingly extreme interesting content to experience the same level of excitement.

Over time, the brain responds to these artificial dopamine spikes by reducing the number of dopamine receptors. Thus, physically alters the brain’s reward system, leads to more frequent exhaustion and worsen the ability to concentrate or enter a state of flow. This effect is scientifically called dopamine desensitization.

Impacts on the Brain’s Gray Matter

Brain’s MRI scans of people who are frequently-exposed to pornography shows alterations in neurological activities, most notably is the damages in the striatum, the brain’s decision-making regions. Scientific reports also link pornography addiction to the reduction of gray matter. These impacts often causes brain defects, like Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease.
